The IoN leads the European network of networks, Nanoforum as well as working closely with governments, universities, researchers and companies worldwide on micro and nanotechnology.

Publications
Since 1994, the Institute of Nanotechnology, and in its previous incarnation as the Centre in Scotland for Nanotechnology, has interfaced with the nanotechnology community worldwide, held regular leading edge events on nanotechnology and its applications, and produced several important milestone publications.

Knowledge of nanotechnology research
Since its inception, the Institute has developed very close links with the nanotechnology community in the UK, Europe and the US. This has enabled it to produce its own unique highly informative reports on nanotechnology activities for Government bodies, major industrial and investment companies worldwide.

Contracts - Track record
Recent contracts have included:

2001 DTI Contract: 'Benchmarking UK Nanotechnology' – undertaken in conjunction with NPL. The results formed the basis of the John Taylor report published in July 2002 'New Dimensions in Manufacturing - A UK Strategy for Nanotechnology

2001 DTI Contract: Organisation of Nanotechnology Missions to Germany and the East Coast USA. (Report published June 2001, available from the IoN)

2002 DTI Contract: Organisation of Nanotechnology Mission to the West Coast USA to examine the major nanofabrication centres. (Report published February 2003, available from the IoN)

2002 EU Contract: To lead pan-European NanoNetwork of Networks, Nanoforum. The network will receive 2.7 million euros over four years to undertake a series of actions aimed at raising awareness of nanotechnology, catalysing transnational research partnerships, developing industrial and postgraduate training in nanotechnology, and informing industry and the public. Partners include the research arm of the French Atomic Energy Authority at Grenoble, CEA-Leti, the Futures Division of the German Association of Engineers VDI-TZ, coordinator of the Phantoms Nanoelectronics Network - CMP Cientifica, and Nordic Nanotech.

2002 -3 DTI Contract: Establishing the Industrial Nanolandscape in the UK. This study is aimed at identifying the level of current and proposed activities at the nanoscale within UK industry.

2002- 3: DTI Contract: European Micro and Nanofabrication Centres as Models for the UK. The contract is based on describing the modus operandi of major European Nanotechnology Centres, as possible models for a future UK initiative.

The Institute has also been instrumental in catalysing UK interest in the EU's Framework 6, working with companies and organisations such as Johnson Matthey, BP, ICI, Unilever, Syngenta, CRL and PERA.

Links with Industry
The Institute is active in forming links between research and industry, and has undertaken specific work for many blue-chip companies in Europe, including 3i, Toshiba, GSK, Unilever, Sharp, Degussa, BNFL and Genral Electric.
