Bat Face wins science photo award
Steve Gschmeissner has won the top prize at the national Visions of Science & Technology Photographic Awards with his photo named Bat Face. The competition, which is worth £1,000 in cash plus £500 worth of photographic vouchers to the overall winner, has been running for the past six months.
The competition, which is organised by The Science Photo Library, the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) and The Daily Telegraph, aims to encourage discussion about science and technology. Entries went into five categories; concepts, art, close-up, action and people.
Congratulations Bat Face
Adam Hart-Davis, TV celebrity and keen photographer, as well as being one of the judges, was overwhelmed with the quality of entries. "The entries for the Visions of Science and Technology Awards were of much higher quality than in previous years. The judges had considerable difficulty choosing the winners, but they certainly enjoyed the challenge," he commented. Other judges included scientists, photographers and picture editors.
According to Gschmeissner, who won the close up as well as the overall category: "I'm delighted the competition is back. It's completely unique and I find it really exciting as it highlights the cross over between science and technology with art. You can put several images into the competition and you never know which one might win. I'd certainly encourage others to enter the competition next year; all you need is a camera and some imagination."
Buoyed by the success of the competition, Adrian Talbot from The ETB – who was project coordinator – commented: "The Visions of Science and Technology Awards provide a great platform for anyone to become involved in or discuss the role of science and technology in our everyday lives. With categories, such as People, which looks at communicating the impact of science, engineering, technology or medicine on people's lives, and Art which illustrates the beauty of science, engineering and technology, there's something for everyone to enjoy and discover. We're already looking forward to seeing the entries for the 2008 competition which will be launched next spring."
