Vegetable oil to power Broads holiday boats

Source: Guardian Unlimited

Forty holiday cruise boats on the Norfolk Broads are to be fitted with engines run on vegetable oil fuel in an experiment to test the efficiency and value of "green power".

A team from Newcastle University will spend next year's holiday season measuring emissions from the launches, whose biodiesel is designed to be free of potential greenhouse gas wastes.

A Broads Authority spokesman said: "The Broads will be the first place in the UK to use substantial quantities of this type of fuel in boats. More and more of our visitors want to enjoy the natural environment without causing damage."
