Engineering the future

A community of six engineering bodies will join forces under the banner of Engineering the future to give support and consultation to the proposed energy National Policy Statement (NPS).

The energy NPS should, if introduced, help to establish the UK’s future needs for energy infrastructure. Environmental targets will be considered in designing the infrastructure as well as a plan to speed up the process for its delivery.

Engineering the future is made up of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Chemical Engineers (ICE), Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Engineering and Technology Board and the Royal Academy of Engineering, who, as a group, believe that the NPS will be vital to delivering the energy infrastructure the UK needs for the coming years.

The group also believes that the NPS will be very important in setting the agenda for developing all forms of low carbon and renewable energy sources and reducing the UK’s increasing dependence on imported gas.

Speaking of the behalf of the alliance ICE Director General Tom Foulkes said: “Our existing energy infrastructure is ageing and requires a major overhaul to meet future needs. Speeding up the planning system is crucial if we are to meet the UK’s future energy needs.”

“In conjunction with the IPC [Infrastructure Planning Commission], the NPSs should help prevent delays by providing the framework for a more efficient process of delivery.”
