Cool, clean Canadian energy.

The small town of Bela Coola in British Columbia, Canada, is to become the site for a new, cutting edge sustainable energy venture.

Called the HARP project, the move should see the area’s annual diesel consumption drop by 200,000 litres and see the adoption of sustainable energy provided by the local river.

The system employs ‘peak power shaving’ by converting energy from the river into hydrogen, which is later converted – through a fuel cell – into electricity when needed.

"This project demonstrates how the integration of renewable power and clean fuel cell technology can displace diesel generation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," commented Powertech Executive Chairman Mossadiq S. Umedaly.

Testing is currently underway, with the system expected to be in full operation later in the year.
