DVD review: The Dark Knight

To think this used to be knockabout stuff for the kids. Christopher Nolan, having revived the series from the Joel Schumacher days, takes it a stage further down the route towards deep psychological trauma.

Christian Bale's Batman and Heath Ledger's Joker are seen as two damaged psyches ("You complete me," the Joker tells his nemesis). In time, Two-Face - unwatchably damaged in the latter stages - becomes a bigger freak than both.

It's too long and too technological for my liking, but its cool, operatic sheen is undeniably impressive. And what a role to go out on for Ledger, with his weird white face and persona, reminiscent of ex-Batman Michael Keaton in Beetle Juice.

You’ve read it. Now review it.
