Curse of the Golden Flower (Zhang Yimou, 2006)9am & 6.15pm, Sky Movies Indie

This sumptuous movie - part martial arts epic, part flower festival - looked like a dress rehearsal for the Zhang Yimou-designed Beijing Olympic ceremonials. It stars Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li as emperor and empress in 10th-century China - he's trying to poison her in a tale of court skulduggery, awesome night-time battles and many, many chrysanthemums.

Garden State (Zach Braff, 2004)11.05pm, Film4

An engaging piece of film-making by Scrubs star Braff, who directed, wrote and stars in this tale of self-discovery. He plays a minor movie star returning to his New Jersey home on the death of his mother and being coaxed out of his over-medicated, aimless existence by oddball Natalie Portman. It's a little self-consciously quirky, but intelligent and charming.

Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks, 1974)12.25am, BBC4

One of Brooks's most successful spoofs. His script, co-written with star Gene Wilder, is fall-about funny and there's a top-flight cast: Wilder as the grandson of the Baron; Madeline Kahn his fiancee; Marty Feldman as Igor; and Gene Hackman the blind hermit. But none is better than Peter Boyle as the eternally bewildered creature.
