Inflatable seatbelts
In the design, a cylindrical air bag is attached to a seat belt that reaches from the buckle to the shoulder. It fits inside a pocket and is sewn in the belt.
To inflate the bag, the car would send a signal to the belt when it stops suddenly. The bag is reported to inflate more gently than those at the front of the car, and give additional support to the head and the neck.
Ford engineer Srini Sundararajan explained that the wider belts and bags help distribute crash forces across the occupant's chest, so there's less chance of serious injury.
