Let’s get physical

Video games are recognised as active play.

A new study conducted by Nottingham Trent University, the Department of Health and Nottingham University Hospital has found that video gaming helps fitness and can burn fat.

Usually attributed with obesity in inactive children, the health benefits found in playing video games in clinical trial has been linked to being a part of children’s daily physical activity.

In the trails, 15 children were recruited to complete the first phase of the study. It was found that their energy expenditure, while playing interactively with Sony EyeToy and Nintendo Wii Sports, increased by about 42 per cent above levels measured during more traditional games.

Michael Rawlinson, Director General of ELSPA (the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association) said: “We are delighted with the conclusions of the study. The early signs are that these highly interactive games may offer a means of helping provide the recommended daily physical activity for children in the secure environs of their own homes.”

More on Wii Fit...

How the low-powered Wii moved aside the big boys
Coming up to its second Christmas, the Nintendo Wii is still in short supply in some markets, including the US and the UK. And while electronics products are supposed to fall in price - like Apple's iPhone and Sony's PlayStation 3 - the Wii has got more expensive.

Left 4 Dead very much alive
The January sales figures from the US are in. The big surprise isn't Nintendo's continued success – surely every Wii owner must have a copy of Mario Kart by now? – but how well co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead is doing. It was the fourth biggest seller behind Wii Fit, Play and Mario Kart, outselling the likes of Call of Duty: World at War and Guitar Hero: World Tour. For an old-fashioned hardcore game that is essentially multiplayer only – yes you can play offline, but you know what I mean – to sell so well in the current casual-friendly climate must be as surprising to publisher EA as it was to me. And it's only available for PC and Xbox 360.

Nintendo's winter games
If, like Greg, you were disappointed by the Nintendo DSi announcment, you may be more interested in the winter games line-up revealed today. First up, the Wii Speak channel is set to launch on November 16, allowing users of the Wii Speak microphone bundled with Animal Crossing: City Folk (or sold separately) to engage in conference video calls with friends and relatives.
