New robotic surgery technique debuts.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham (UAB), USA, have pioneered a new surgical technique for head and neck cancer.

Although robotic surgery has been adopted at centres around the world, it has not been associated with this part of the body.

Speaking about the development, William Carroll, M.D., a scientist in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, said: "This application takes robotic surgery to new places in the body…There is an option for patients to have a more minimally invasive surgery, and one that could effectively remove the cancer while causing fewer side effects."

Surgeons can achieve greater accuracy due to tiny cameras attached to the robot. These provide a magnified, 3D image offering a much greater field of vision than traditional surgical techniques.
