The iTunes Store is a service for Macs and PCs for users to legally purchase and download music and video online.
The online music shop was launched four years ago and just six months ago had surpassed the two billion tracks-sold mark.
It took nearly three years since its inception in April 2003 for iTunes to sell its first billion songs, a milestone achieved in February 2006.
The store's catalogue boasts over five million songs, 500 television shows and 500 films.
Third largest music retailer in the US
iTunes has recently beaten online store Amazon and American shopping chain Target to become the third largest music retailer in the US, according to a survey by marketing firm NPD Group.
"We’d like to thank all of our customers who have contributed to this incredible milestone," said Apple’s vice president of iTunes, Eddy Cue.
Apple credits ease of use and features such as Cover Flow, integrated podcasting support, iMix playlist sharing, integration between iPod and iPhone and the ability to turn previously purchased songs into completed albums at reduced prices as reasons why the service is so popular.
The company had sold some 100 million iPods worldwide as of April 2007.
