Finding a line

A researcher has designed an ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO) based on the mechanisms used by ant colonies and a commercial videogame. The resulting computer simulator aims to help with the mobility of troops on the battlefield.

Inspired by the behaviour of ants, who are able to find the best trajectories from their colonies to food , Antonio Miguel Mora García from the department of Computer Architecture and Technology at the University of Granada developed several algorithms designed to locate the best path within a particular environment.

The ACO allows military troops to define the best route in a battlefield that considers security criteria, such as reaching their destination with the lowest number of casualties and the quickest journey possible.

Mora García started the work with the battlefields present in the videogame Panzer General™ before adapting it to better represent reality.

Military technology: MoD announces winner of robot challenge
British forces could soon be launching teams of autonomous spy robots to scope out enemy-held villages and towns. The technology was developed for the Ministry of Defence's Grand Challenge, a contest to find the best robotic air and ground vehicles for identifying threats such as snipers and roadside bombs. If future work goes well, the technology could be at the disposal of the army within 18 months.
