More on health and safety...

Life support
The process of recruiting 24 health visitors will be started this month by NHS Barking and Dagenham in east London, bucking a trend that has seen primary care trusts (PCTs) around the country freeze health visiting posts and cut training places. But even before the adverts went out, the PCT admitted it is unlikely to succeed - and is not even sure of filling nine training places in 2009 because there are too few experienced clinical teachers to support students while they learn.

A sporting chance
Friday night in a bar at Headingley sports stadium in Leeds, half an hour before the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team kicks off, and a stall offering quick health MOTs is doing a steady trade. Andrew Harrison and Pete Westwood are busy measuring the height, weight, waist size, blood pressure and cholesterol level of men who might usually be having a pre-match pie or pint. Some volunteers get a clean bill of health; others are signed up for on-site courses to help them lose weight or stop smoking; a few are advised to visit a GP.

Playing to the unhealthy crowd
Health is a female issue, right? A lot of media health coverage certainly gives that impression, the Jade Goody/cervical cancer fascination being a classic case. Men make up 49% of the population but their health issues get only spasmodic attention, at least compared to fertility, pregnancy, childbirth and abortion. And given the widespread male reluctance to discuss their own wellbeing with people in white coats, it's an area in which the NHS really needs to do much better.
