More on seismic data...

Registering interest in re-use of data
For the past two years, these pages have campaigned for data that government bodies collect at taxpayers' expense to be made freely available to all. We've uncovered some examples of the absurdities that happen when public bodies have to wield legal weapons, sometimes against each other, to protect "their" data.

OS move raises political stakes
Say you work in a local authority. Being helpful, you want people to be able to find the public toilets in your area via an online map. So you look on your in-house mapping system for the locations of those toilets (which your council built, maintains and cleans, and whose location you originally fed into the in-house map), and begin feeding their positions on to Google Maps, Microsoft Live and Yahoo's Maps.

An Inspired debate on access
First, some very good news. Civil servants revealed last week that the British government has begun work on a system to make all the geospatial data it holds on the natural environment available for free inspection and re-use. Now the bad news. In this context, "free" means we will still have to pay to download much key data, especially if it is to be published or otherwise used commercially.
