Event preview: Edinburgh International Science Festival, Edinburgh
Taking the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the fact that it is the International Year of Astronomy as its starting point, this annual celebration of scientific achievement hosts a vast array of talks, exhibitions, musical events and more that span the city. The opening weekend offers the opportunity to meet ASIMO, which is Honda's advanced humanoid robot, and you can also explore the science and history of hauntings with psychologists, historians and film-makers. Local interest comes in the shape of Roy Dennis's talk on ospreys, while the City Art Centre has plenty available for younger science fans, with Lego robots, Nina and the Neurons and Wee Wonder World.
Science vs superstition, not science vs religion
We are not going to understand the growth of creationism in modern England so long as we think of it as a primarily Christian phenomenon, or even a religious one. Take a look at the most recent surveys of creationist belief among teachers and among the general public. One was conducted by Theos, the Christian thinktank, and has been attacked by the BHA – more of this later – and the other measured attitudes towards creationism among school teachers.
MORI poll: 29% of science teachers believe creationism should be taught
Almost three out of ten specialist science teachers believe that creationism should be taught alongside evolution in school science lessons, according to a national poll of primary and secondary teachers.
