Last calls for Enterprising Britain 2008.

In its fourth year, Enterprising Britain 2008 is looking for examples of enterprising excellence in regions across the UK. Now, the countdown has started as the first regional heats are only weeks away.

Launched by Shriti Vadera, Minister for Business and Competitiveness for the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), Enterprising Britain 2008 wants to encourage the ventures that have helped transform the social and economic fortunes of their communities to enter.

On behalf of BERR, Enterprising Britain 2008 is run by Make Your Mark in partnership with the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and the Devolved Administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

When launching the competition, Shriti Vadera said: "Enterprise, especially small businesses, start-ups and growing companies are the heart of the UK's economy. I support this grass-roots campaign, which identifies and celebrates the regions where enterprise has created jobs, brought communities together and made a real difference to local business and local people."

Innovative thinking

Peter Jones, entrepreneur and Enterprising Britain 2008 judge, said: "As an Enterprising Britain judge, I have been extremely impressed by the strength, determination and innovative thinking demonstrated by those people who have used enterprise to transform the social and economic fortunes of their community. The Enterprising Britain competition is a great chance for enterprise success stories from across the UK to shine - I am really looking forward to finding out what 2008 holds in store."

With only weeks to go before the regional heats of Enterprising Britain 2008 close, enterprise hotspots from across the UK are being urged to get their entries in quickly.

The competition is opened to entrants on the 18 February 2008. 12 regional winners from across the UK will be selected by the RDAs and Devolved Administrations by the end of May. These winners will be visited by members of the Enterprising Britain judging panel in June or July 2008, before going forward to the national Enterprising Britain final.

To enter the competition contact your local RDA or Devolved Administration for an entry form, or download it from http://www.enterprisingbritain.org/about.

More on enterprise...

Big cash boost for social enterprise
A new Department of Health (DH) social enterprise investment fund is to pour £73m over the next four years into organisations providing health and social care services in local communities. The fund is part of the government's push to expand social enterprise in health and social care provision, outlined in the 2006 white paper Our Health, Our Care, Our Say. The cash will be used to start, set up and build social enterprises that meet specific health and social care needs.

Researchers follow the Enterprise and look into warp speed
Captain Kirk and his crew may someday be followed on their travels across the universe at warp speed by the rest of us. If scientists meeting for a one-day international conference next week have their way, the starship Enterprise's warp drive will no longer be the stuff of science fiction but a viable means of travelling vast distances at faster than the speed of light.
