Girls! Make Your Mark
Girls! Make Your Mark is a campaign set to inspire more young women to have more ideas and make them happen. It has been set up to respond to the disparity between men and women when it comes to setting up a business.
The new campaign is set to inspire young women as part of Enterprise Week.
Part of Enterprise Week (12-18 November 2007) the annual UK-wide week of activities aims to inspire people in their teens and twenties to generate their own enterprises.
Last year’s Enterprise Week was a huge success. There were 3,184 events held across the UK, run by 1,410 organisations. Enterprise Week 2007 aims to do the same.
The aim of the Girls! Make Your Mark campaign is to provide young women and girls with realistic role models. The more positive media exposure given to young women from different backgrounds, ethnicity, geographical areas, ages and business sectors, the more likely it is that other young women will be encouraged and inspired to consider enterprise for themselves.
As the rate of women’s entrepreneurship is half that of men’s, girls are conversely known to perform exceptionally well in education. In England and Wales, young women are outperforming young men in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and IT subjects by one or two percentage points at A level, but the percentage point difference is more marked at AS level.
However, more men are attaining vocational qualifications in Engineering (95 per cent), Construction and Property (95 per cent), and Science and Mathematics (54 per cent).
It is hoped that Girls! Make Your Mark will serve to close that gender divide.

Make Your Mark campaign, Terry Marsh, the Director of The WISE (Women Into Science, Engineering and Construction) Campaign said: “Girls are naturally enterprising, and Make Your Mark offers some excellent resources to encourage girls to think big, and think creatively.”
