New, faster quad-core microchips save energy
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have today unveiled their new ‘quad-core’ chips which, the manufacturer claims, can boost server speeds as well as saving energy.
The processor, which AMD will incorporate into its Opteron range of chips, is already on order from Lucasfilm, filmmaker George Lucas’ production company.
The chip, which has been code-named ‘Barcelona,’ sees AMD enter the struggle to win customers from Intel, in the lucrative market of workstations and power server chips.
New chips for new times
The move comes a year after the introduction of Intel’s own quad-core processor. Whereas Intel packages two dual processors together, AMD has managed to accommodate the four separate ‘brains’ on one piece of silicon. In theory, this should improve communication between processors.
As part of the product launch, AMD has announced a scheme to measure the power consumption of its chips, a move that will bring it closer to the way Intel rates its chips.
