A new series of technologies aim to help unclog roadworks-derived traffic by the digital mapping of underground pipes and cables.

Called the VISTA project, the team – based at the University of Nottingham – have focused on creating 3D maps of buried utility networks. This will be developed into a virtual reality style representation, allowing workers to ‘see’ underground.

As many underground utilities date back to Victorian times, maps and plans are often limited and inaccurate. This has led to the need for exploratory hole digging and extended disruption.

It is expected that the ‘map’ will eventually be available on the web.
