Music preview: Lynne Arriale, London

A classical pianist who was a late convert to jazz, the subtle and highly melodic Milwaukee pianist Lynne Arriale operates in a jazz territory that's increasingly hard to put a personal stamp on - the world of pop-song shapes, harmonious chord changes and steady time - with much of the latter in Arriale's case taken at a cool mid-tempo. But if her materials are easy to take for granted, she's a deceptive creator with a mind and touch of her own. Her soft sound and graceful thematic development echo both Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, but she addresses the jazz repertoire as if she were a singer, and savours well-crafted romantic themes, both her own and those of others, from Lennon and McCartney's Come Together to an Abdullah Ibrahim classic and Chick Corea tunes.

A cannily chosen repertoire mixed with spontaneous invention is why Arriale makes friends outside of the jazz loop.
