Electronics giant Samsung has signalled its intention to develop next generation radios for the future by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with IMEC to develop software-defined units that use wireless communications intelligently.

As the amount of transmitted data increases by approximately a factor of 10 every 5 years, use of the spectrum will also increase and have to be approached intelligently. Equally, as the associated energy needed increases by around 16 – 20 % every year, this issue also has to be tackled.

As part of this, Samsung is committing to developing cognitive radios that can respond to a changing environment in terms of available communication frequencies and conditions, such as movement and signal strength.

"We are expecting the differentiated technologies developed together with IMEC to be the key ingredients of Samsung's next generation mobile devices," commented Samsung’s Dr. Kim, Head of the Digital System Research Center.
