Simon Choppin

After completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with Mathematics at Nottingham University Simon thought he’d get his teeth stuck into a PhD. Fancying himself as a bit of an athlete, Simon chose a PhD in Sports Engineering in the area of tennis research, three years on he finds himself near completion, wondering why no-one’s rumbled him yet. In the course of his research at Sheffield University, Simon’s tested some of the best tennis players in the world at the Wimbledon Qualifying tournament, been trusted with some of the oldest tennis rackets in existence at the Wimbledon museum archives, and travelled to the far reaches of the globe to tell others about his work.

When not using super high-speed video to watch tennis in super slow motion Simon works with local schools promoting science and engineering, giving presentations and demonstrations in an effort to inspire and motivate the engineers of tomorrow, he hasn’t worn a labcoat in several years. Out of the lab, Simon makes the most of the Yorkshire sunshine to go mountain biking, play football inexpertly, or juggle and unicycle away from the public’s prying eye.

String theory, the strange world of science and perception

I came into the world of sports engineering as a keen cyclist, I found the world of sport fascinating, and wanted to be able to apply my soon to be completed degree in mechanical engineering to understand more about the role science has to play in sport.

When I was offered a PhD in the area of tennis, I snapped it up, it worked with all the areas of engineering that I loved as an undergraduate and showed the potential for some fascinating and interesting work....

Football and Global Warming

After many delays and much grumbling from the British press and public, the world class Wembley stadium is finally up and running. With today’s media climate, it is no surprise that at almost the same time, a news story pops up decrying football fans as enemies of the environment....

Science and Sport?

Science and sport? Perhaps not something you’d usually put side by side, but the truth is, look at almost any sport today and science will have had some part to play. How has science changed the face of modern sport? What role does it have today, and who does it serve? I thought I’d kick this blog off with these meaty questions because they form a pretext for a lot of other issues within science, engineering and sport....
