Equation

    Name Debye-Waller factor

    Equation F = F 0 exp ( - Q 2 u 2 / 3 )

Definition of terms F = structure factor, F0 = structure factor for atoms at rest, Q = momentum transfer, u2 = mean square displacement of the atoms

    Comments

The Debye-Waller factor is a factor in the diffraction scattering intensity, which takes account of the displacement of the atoms due to thermal vibration. IN the harmonic approximation, this factor is as given above.

This correction to the structure factor increases linearly with temperature for high temperatures.
