Equation

    Name Decay Law

    Equation N = N 0 e - λt

    Definition of terms

N = population of atoms, N0 = population of atoms at t = 0, λ= decay constant, t = time

    Comments

  A sample of N0 radioactive nuclei, with decay constant λ, will decay to N nuclei in a time t .

The decay constant is related to the half-life by the equation In 2 = λt1/2 where t1/2 is the half-life.
