Equation

    Name Decibel

    Equation n = 10 log 10 ( I 1 I 2 ) = 20 log 10 ( P 1 P 2 )

Definition of terms n = number of decibels, I1 and I2 = sound intensities, P1 and P2 = sound pressures

    Comments

  Two sounds with intensities I1 and I2 differ in intensity by n decibels where n = 10 log 10 ( I 1 I 2 ) . Intensity measurement is not often convenient and so the equation n = 20 log 10 ( P 1 P 2 ) , where P1 and P2 are the root-mean-square sound pressures, is often used.
