Equation

    Name Diffraction Grating

    Equation a sin θ m = m λ

    Definition of terms

a = separation of slits, θm= angle between the diffracted beam and the perpendicular to the grating, m = integer (including zero), λ = wavelength

    Comments

When a diffraction grating with slits separated by a is illuminated with monochromatic light of wavelength λ, then the diffraction pattern will consist of variations in intensity. The maxima of this pattern occur at θm, which is given by the above equation.
