Equation

    Name Dispersivity, dispersive power

    Equation d = n 2 - n 1 n ¯ - 1

    Definition of terms

d = dispersivity, n1 and n2 = refractive indices at two specified wavelengths, n ¯ = refractive index at the mean of the two wavelengths, or at the wavelength of the sodium D line

    Comments

The dispersivity is a measure of the power of a medium to separate different colours of light. n1 and n2 are the refractive indices of the medium at two specified wavelengths of light. n ¯  is the refractive index of the medium at the mean of these two wavelengths, or at the wavelength of the sodium D line.
