Equation

    Name Displacement

    Equation D = ε 0 E + P

    Definition of terms

D = displacement, ε0 = electric constant, E = electric field, P = polarisation

    Comments

  The electric displacement D is defined as above. The polarisation P is the magnetic dipole moment per unit volume.

  For an isotropic dielectric, P is parallel to E and the above equation reduces to D = εε0E, where ε is called the dielectric constant.
