Equation

    Name

Feedback Factor

    Equation V out V in = - A 1 - β A

    Definition of terms

Vout = output voltage of op-amp, Vin = input voltage of op-amp, A = gain of op-amp without feedback, β = fraction of output "fed back" into input

    Comments

An operational amplifier (or op-amp) is a high-gain amplifier. It has two inputs at voltages V1 and V2. The output voltage is equal to A(V2V1), where A is called the gain of the op-amp and is a large positive number, of the order of 104.

A fraction β of this is fed back into one of the inputs, β being known as the gain of the feedback path.

This allows for great control of the output voltage of the op-amp, which is given by the equation above.
