Equation

    Name

First Law of Thermodynamics

    Equation Δ U = Δ Q + Δ W

    Definition of terms

ΔU = change in internal energy of the system, ΔQ = heat entering the system,
ΔW = work done on the system

    Comments

The first law of thermodynamics states that the change of the internal energy of a system is the sum of two things: the work done on the system, and the heat entering the system.

It is a restatement of the conservation of energy.
