Equation

    Name

Fresnel Reflection Coefficients

    Equation | R | 2 = sin 2 ( i - r ) sin 2 ( i + r ) for incident wave polarised perpendicularly to plane of incidence | R | 2 = tan 2 ( i - r ) tan 2 ( i + r ) for incident wave polarised parallel to plane of incidence

    Definition of terms

R = reflection coefficient, i = angle of incidence, r = angle of reflection

    Comments

  When a beam of light is incident on a boundary between two media, some is reflected off the boundary, and some is refracted into the second medium. The reflection coefficients are given here for an incident wave in the cases that it is polarised perpendicular and parallel to the plane of incidence.
