Equation

    Name Self-Inductance

    Equation L = I

    Definition of terms L = inductance, N = number of turns, Φ = magnetic flux, I = current

    Comments

When a current I flows in a circuit, a magnetic flux is set up and there will be a magnetic flux Φ through the circuit. This flux will be proportional to the current, and the constant of proportionality L is called the self-inductance of the circuit.

The equation above extends this analysis to the case of a current flowing in a coil of N turns.
