Equation

    Name Transformer

    Equation V 2 V 1 = - N 2 N 1

Definition of terms V1 = voltage of first coil, V2 = voltage of second coil, N1 = turns on first coil, N2 = turns on second coil

    Comments

A transformer consists of a coil of N1 turns attached to a voltage source, and a coil of N2 turns nearby with a resistance across it. The voltage induced in the second coil will be given by the equation above.

Transformers are widely used in circuits for changing the voltage at which parts of the circuit run.
