Equation

    Name Angle of Minimum Deviation

    Equation n 2 n 1 = sin 1 2 ( a + δ m ) sin 1 2 α

    Definition of terms

n2 and n1 = the refractive indices of the two media, α = angle between the two interfaces, δm = angle for which the deviation is minimum

Comments   This equation deals with light being refracted by a prism, the two faces of which are separated by an angle α, and a refractive index of n2 , compared to a refractive index outside the prism of n1 .

The angle δ is defined as the angle between the incoming ray and the outgoing ray. This angle is minimised when δ = δm, δmcoming from the equation above.
