Equation

    Name Area expansivity, Superficial expansivity

    Equation β = 2 α

Definition of terms β = thermal coefficient of expansion of area, α = thermal coefficient of expansion of length

Comments   If a solid has a lngth increase such that l2 = l1(1 + αθ), where l2 and l1 are the lengths after and before a temperature rise of θ, then the area of a surface will change analogously such that A2 = A1(1+βθ). To a good approximation β = 2α .
