Equation

    Name Area of Ellipse

    Equation A = π a b

    Definition of terms A = area, a = semimajor axis, b = semiminor axis

Comments   The are of an ellipse is equal to pi multiplied by the semimajor axis multiplied by the semiminor axis. In the special case that a and b are equal, the ellipse becomes a circle, and the familiar A = πr2 formula for the area of a circle results.
