Equation

    Name Area of Segment

    Equation A = 1 2 ( r s - c d )

    Definition of terms
A = area, r = radius, s = arc length, c = length of straight side of segment, d = shortest distance from centre of circle to the straight side of the segment

Comments   Consider a sector of a circle. Drawing a straight line between the ends of the arc marks of an area bounded by this straight line and the side of the circle. This is a segment.

The area of a segment is equal to the area of the sector less the area of the triangle created by the two radii and the straight side of the sector.
