Equation

    Name Balmer Series

    Equation v = R B ( 1 m 2 - 1 n 2 )

Definition of terms v = frequency, RB = empirical constant, m and n are integers representing the energy levels between which the electron moves

Comments   In atomic physics, the equation governing the emitted frequencies of photons falling from the energy level n to the energy level m is as above. The Balmer series consists of the spectrum of electrons falling to the m = 2 energy level. The constant RB is empirically determined and different for each atom.

It is named after Johann Jakob Balmer (1825 - 1898), a Swiss mathematician and schoolteacher.
