Equation

    Name Brackett Series

    Equation v = R ( 1 m 2 - 1 n 2 )

Definition of terms v = frequency, R is an empirical constant, m and n are integers representing the energy levels between which the electron moves

Comments   In atomic physics, the equation governing the frequencies of photons emitted due to electrons falling from energy level n to energy level m is as above. In the Brackett series, the electrons are falling to the m = 4 level. The constant R is determined empirically, and different for each atom.

The Brackett series is named after Frederick Brackett (1896 - 1980).
