Equation

    Name Brunt-Väisälä Frequency

    Equation N = ( - g ρ &partial; ρ &partial; z ) 1 / 2

    Definition of terms N = Brunt-Väisälä frequency, g = acceleration due to gravity, ρ = density, z = vertical displacement

Comments A small particle of fluid displaced vertically in a fluid that is otherwise at rest will oscillate about its original position with angular frequency N , called the Brunt-Väisälä frequency.
