Equation

    Name Capilarity

    Equation H = 2 γ cos θ ρga

Definition of terms H = height of fluid in tube, γ = surface tension, θ = angle between edge of fluid meniscus and side of tube, g = acceleration due to gravity, a = radius of tube

Comments   In a thin vertical tube part filled with fluid, the surface tension in the top causes a jump in the pressure across the interface, which allows a column of liquid to be supported against gravity. The height H of this column is given by the above equation.
