Equation

    Name Circular Velocity

    Equation V = g r = G M r

    Definition of terms

v = velocity of orbiting particle, g = acceleration due to gravity, r = radius of orbit, G = gravitational constant, M = mass of orbited body

Comments   For a particle in circular orbit, the inward gravitational force mg provides the centripetal force mv2/r necessary to maintain the circular orbit. By cancelling terms, the equation above is obtained.
