Equation
Name
de Broglie Equation
Equation
λ
=
h
p
Definition of terms
λ= de Broglie wavelength,
h
= Planck's constant,
p
= momentum
Comments
The hypothesis of de Broglie is that just as light acts as a wave and as a particle, so matter can act as a particle and a wave.
A photon has an associated light wave that governs its motion, and a particle has an associated matter wave that governs its motion. The wavelength of this matter wave is called the de Broglie wavelength.
This has been experimentally observed in the form of diffraction effects amongst objects normally described as particles. Good quantitative agreement has been found with electrons, neutrons, hydrogen, helium and others.
