Equation

    Name Relativistic Mass

    Equation m = m 0 1 - v 2 c 2

Definition of terms m = relativistic mass, m0 = rest mass, v = velocity of particle, c = speed of light

    Comments

Defining the mass of a particle from E = mc2 , special relativity requires that the mass increases as in the equation above. As the speed of a particle approaches that of light, the mass tends to infinity.

The concept of relativistic mass is little used now, the preferred convention is to quote only the rest mass and use the mass-energy equation to say that the increase in energy comes from an increase in momentum.
