Cadres or caddies? Island looks to golf to drive its tourist economy
Features
Johan Vega knows the Havana Golf Club well. Too well. He has played every bunker, green and fairway thousands of times and the course has become monotonous. "It's like being on a carousel, round and round, round and round. I can do it with my eyes shut." To demonstrate, Vega drops a ball to his feet, closes his eyes and with an eight-iron makes a neat chip towards the green.

Golf carts switch course from green to road
Features
A Missouri police chief, Rickey Jones, this week surprised a drug dealer in the middle of a deal. The really surprising part was how Jones arrived at the scene: rather than screeching to a halt in a squad car, he approached, almost silently, in an electric golf cart. "There's no engine, no loud motor, so he didn't hear us coming," he recalled.

Padded pants changed my life

I have put off buying proper cycling equipment for years, because I didn't want to become Golfclub Man. This is the rich individual - God knows how I arrived at his gender - who buys a load of expensive stuff before he can actually do anything with it, and is forever mocked and shunned by his golf associates. This dogged behaviour (of mine, not Golfclub Man's) has led me to really, really appreciate bike equipment, because I know well what it was like not to have.

When I was editor of this magazine I used to fantasise sometimes about receiving a phone call from a representative of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum in Dubai. The caller would invite me to live and work in the desert state, preferably in charge of a new global sports magazine, located in a tall air-conditioned tower, with the view of the Persian Gulf and the Palm Islands construction site from one window of my office and huge cranes and a 10-lane freeway from the other. The call never came, of course, but I have since become an occasional visitor to Dubai, attracted there by its superabundance and vitality, preposterous ambition, sports facilities and complete uninterest in the past.

For many British tourists, Murcia rings bells only as home to La Manga, the five-star golf and spa resort favoured by pop stars and footballers. But the region has lots more to offer: 250km of coast, beautiful beaches, a natural lagoon, a national park and many historic towns. Away from La Manga's highlife pleasures, the region can feel remote and rural, with wide, arid plains and rocky mountains.
