Crashproof
A new European project has been launched with the aim of launching a series of car road safety systems. The project, called PReVENT, has a budget of over €50 million.
Under the guise of 12 different but complimentary streams, PReVENT aims to re-examine existing and inexpensive car technology – such as parking sensors and satellite navigation – and redevelop them to increase driver safety. It will also examine more experimental technology.
WILLWARN
An example of one project is WILLWARN, which involves developing wireless communication between vehicles to alert drivers about hazardous situations ahead.
“The teams developed sophisticated algorithms to track all these elements in the landscape…But they require enormous computer power to keep track of all the various elements, so this work is aimed at basic research, establishing how it could be done. It will be a while before in-car computers are sophisticated enough to use these systems,” commented Matthias Schulze, PReVENT project and Senior Manager for ITS & Services at Daimler AG.
